Marie Kondō Book Review

If you’ve been keeping up with my journey or are just learning about minimalism, then this is a definite book you should read. It’s called The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing by Marie Kondō. Does her name sound familiar? She has a new show on Netflix! If you’ve started watching it, I recommend reading her books! Marie Kondō created a tidying method of her own and has a widely large clientele where she assists people in cleaning and organizing their homes. In this book, you’ll learn about her method, clients she’s assisted, and how you can achieve a tidy and stress free home.

My review is as follows:

I enjoyed reading this book. I found that a lot of things that she mentioned to do I was already doing! While I continued to read, it made me want to start cleaning and purging right away but I made myself finish the book before going any further with the process.

I’ll admit I did skip some parts here and there as they did not pertain to me(ie: keeping manuals, living with large families, etc)

One thing I really enjoyed was her explaining the process in which you should tidy your things – starting with clothes, books, and then going down the line of everything else. Reading it made so much sense to me and made sense to the fact that even tidying in this order can create less stress about it. I’ve been putting it to the test and have been thoroughly impressed.

Before reading this book, my only basis to declutter and organize was to hold the items and ask “Does this spark joy?” I would fly around my room and look at everything I could visibly see and just start discarding. With the new method found in this book, it became a lot easier to sort and discard by category rather than place. It also made the process go a lot faster.

From start to finish I always felt motivated and inspired to start tidying more. Something I really loved was that she stated she is a self-proclaimed lazy person yet she keeps her space tidy and organized. All you need to do is find your balance and what works best for you and you can achieve the perfect environment for your house and yourself.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book. I intend to keep it around to look back as a guideline and to keep myself motivated to stay clutter free for life!

As for her Netflix show, if you haven’t started this yet I also recommend it! Something I found really helpful in the show is that she shows you how to fold your clothing. Her method is listed in her book however I’m a visual learner so I didn’t really understand the concept. Watching her actually do it on her show has been life-changing. I actually look forward to folding my clothes now!
