I love home decor and decorating. I’ve had my bedroom style change so much over the years and while I loved each one, I never felt completely at home. Sometimes you walk into a room and it just doesn’t feel right. It doesn’t give you the right energy. Thinking back to all my previous rooms I definitely had a lot of stuff around. I had posters and pictures all over the walls, furniture, dolls, etc. I definitely had no concept of minimalism back then. When I first moved to California I was still in high school and obsessed with The Hunger Games. I had everything: movie posters, magazines, signed posters, pictures…you get it. All of that covered my walls and including all my regular decor. Since then, my style has changed and the amount of things in my room has dwindled down. I believe that with many different moves, I got tired of having to pack up everything, unpack, decorate, and then take it down again. It’s exhausting! In the condo I currently live in, I finally feel at peace with my room. I still keep decorating here and there to complete my aesthetic but I’ve never felt more comfortable in my bedroom before!

Decorating your home can be tough as a minimalist. If you search for a minimalist room you’re bound to find a lot of white walls, limited furniture, and a few pictures or plants. As I’ve said before, there’s no correct way to be a minimalist. It’s whatever brings you joy to your life! Me personally, I hate having empty wall space so I make sure to utilize as much of it as I can. Here are some tips to help you get started.

  1. Use what you have. I do urge you to use some decor that you already have as it saves you money and makes your room a little more special! However, situations can change. Two years ago I purged almost all of the decor in my room. I had gotten out of a long-term relationship and had so much negative energy surrounding me and my room. The more I thought about it the more I realized that all the decor I had was everything to do with my ex. I wanted a room that was specifically ME. So I do approve that if you need that change – GO FOR IT!
  2. It’s OK to have stuff. The goal of minimalism is not to get rid of everything and have a bland room. The goal is to let go of things that don’t bring you joy anymore; to cleanse your house and your emotional well being of any negativity. I purged through some of my books but there are still a bunch that I want to keep! I love rereading them or they have sentimental value to me. They still bring me joy so they stay! As long as you are happy with the outcome, that’s all that matters!
  3. Purge before decorating. If you started minimalism already then by now you should have gone through most of your items and purged what doesn’t bring you joy. If you’re reading this now and are interested in minimalism, then I urge you to purge! Going through all your items will be extremely beneficial for you. You may find some decor you’d like to use or find something to DIY! There are endless possibilities out there for you!

Now ladies and gentlemen, the moment you’ve been waiting for! Here is what I recently did to redecorate my room.

The dresser: I originally had my dresser in my closet because I didn’t like having so much furniture out in my room space. I kept it that way for well over a year and finally I had enough. I started hating having the dresser in my closet as it was hard to get some clothes and my closet felt way more unorganized and cluttered. So out it came! I didn’t want to leave the top bare but wasn’t completely sure what to do with it. I knew I wanted more plants so I got myself a new succulent and cactus. Their spot on the dresser gives them the most sunlight in my room. The vase in the middle was a gift from my dad. Originally it was on my nightstand but I love this arrangement so much better! The seashells and rocks I added because they just fit so well! They originally were laid out on my bookshelf and looked completely out of place. My soap stone jewelry dish, a gift from my mom, was also added to the top along with my copy of Milk and Honey by Rupi Kaur. When I look at my dresser now everything is so perfectly placed and it brings me such a peaceful energy when I look at it.

Wall shelves: When I first added the shelves I used them to hold my plants. They did well but definitely did not get enough sunlight. I was unsure what to put there so I went to Target and decided to peruse. I found the picture frame and fell in love with it! It’s so simple and fits my aesthetic perfectly(all I need now is the perfect picture!) I did one more walk through in the decor section and happened to come across this decorative vase. I instantly fell in love! It’s so cute and fits my color scheme so it was a must have! The top shelf is a work in progress but I do like what’s there now. The candle is from Gypsy Vine Co and it smells amazing! The “No New Friends” was a Christmas gift from one of my close friends and it’s just too cute to not display! I have a feeling I’ll add something else to the top shelf eventually but for now it’s perfect!

—————————————————————————————————————————————–Trying to purge and redecorate can get overwhelming when you start this path of minimalism. You’re creating a whole new life for yourself! It’s a new way of thinking and living. Like I said, my room is still a work in progress and that’s okay! It’s taken me quite a while to figure out what I truly wanted it to look like. We constantly change as people and what we want in our lives. I always had a basic idea of what I wanted my room to look like but couldn’t really piece it together. Pinterest is a helpful site when you’re looking for ideas. I surfed through there for so many hours just looking at different room ideas and seeing what really grabbed my attention and what I aspired my room to look like. In the end, my room is completely my own! It may have the qualities of someone else’s but everything in here I’ve handpicked for myself and fallen in love with. It’s an amazing feeling and knowing that only a few things and the experiences with it give me so much joy makes all of this worth it. Once my room is finally complete I’ll share pictures in a new post – stay tuned!
